2010 BPA World Series

The CCAC will be hosting the BPA World Series this year for ages 11, 14, 15, 16, and 17/18 combined on July 20th through 25th. Opening ceremonies will begin Tuesday and tournament play will begin Wednesday. Our guest speaker for this even will be Bruce Sutter.

Bruce Sutter (Howard Bruce Sutter) was born on January 8, 1953 in Lancaster Pa.   He was signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent in 1971.  Sutter reached the major leagues in 1976 with the Cubs for the start of what would be a stellar 13-year career.  Within a few years he became one of the games top relief pitchers.  In 1980 he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for three players.  It turned out to be a great trade for the Cardinals.  Sutter helped lead the Cardinals to the 1982 World Championship. In 1984 the Atlanta Braves signed him as a free agent.  Unfortunately arm injuries cut short his career and Bruce retired in 1988.

Bruce is widely identified as one of the games dominant relief pitchers.  His trademark out pitch was the split finger fastball.  He led the National League in saves five times (1979-1982 and again in 1984).  He retired with 300 career saves, which at the time was the third highest total in the history of baseball.    Between 1976 and 1980 he saved 133 of the Cub's 379 wins.  He won the National League CY Young award in 1979 as the league's top pitcher.  Bruce was a six time National League All Star.

Bruce was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.  He currently lives with his wife Jamye outside of Atlanta.
